The pipeline infrastructure we invest in today delivers safe and reliable natural gas to more than 700,000 homes and businesses in Western Pennsylvania and this lays the foundation for transformative new technologies that we will deliver in the future.

At Peoples, we’re leading this effort with public and private partnerships to drive the energy revolution toward a cleaner, decarbonized future.

That’s why we are partnering with H Quest and the University of Pittsburgh’s Swanson School of Engineering to pilot an innovative demonstration project that will attempt to create zero-emission hydrogen energy at the scale needed for widespread adoption.

What is Turquoise Hydrogen?

It may sound like a beautiful art project, but turquoise hydrogen is created from natural gas at the end-use point by leveraging our nation's existing natural gas pipelines. The carbon and hydrogen are split before combustion, preventing CO2 emissions. It becomes a solid carbon byproduct used in things like tires, rubber, asphalt, graphite and more. If able to produce at the necessary scale, turquoise hydrogen could avoid the pitfalls of blue and green hydrogen – especially when it comes to cost for both producers and end-use customers.

We are proud to be part of the Appalachian Regional Clean Hydrogen Hub (ARCH2), a regional consortium leading efforts to establish Appalachia as the nation’s foremost hub for hydrogen solutions. And, the nation is taking notice. In October 2023, ARCH2 was selected by the Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations (OCED) to establish a clean energy hub in Appalachia.
