Summer Safety Tips
- Never tether your pet or anything else to your gas line or meter.
- Never attach electrical grounding wires to gas pipes.
- Be very careful not to hit your gas meter when using a lawn mower or weed-whacker.
- A “rotten egg” or sulfur smell can indicate a gas leak. If you notice this when working in your yard (or anywhere in or around your home), call 1.800.400.4271 and leave the area immediately.
- Dead vegetation or discolored soil near a pipeline can indicate a leak. Call 1.800.400.4271 and leave the area right away.
- If your meter is very noisy, or you hear hissing or a high pitched whistle, call 1.800.400.4271 and leave the area immediately.
- Be aware of where gas and other utility lines are buried when working in your yard. Keep in mind that roots can easily grow around pipes, and that you should always call 811 before you pull any shrubs or trees out of the ground.
- Call 811 three days before you dig to have the lines marked – It’s free for homeowners and it’s the law! Examples of when to call 811 include (but are not limited to) installing a fence, mailbox, yard sign, flag pole or basketball hoop, deck, porch, patio, pool, pond, garage, putting in a sprinkler system, pet perimeter fence, septic tank, leech bed, or sand mound, or planting trees and shrubs.
- When digging outside, if a natural gas line or meter is damaged, do not attempt to repair the damage. Call 1.800.400.4271 and leave the area immediately.
