Creating With Gas

When most people think of natural gas, they think of some of the more common uses, such as heating your home or cooking on a natural gas stove. But there are many other ways that natural gas can be used. Americans consume natural gas products at a rate of more than 250 cubic feet per person, per day! It has revolutionized our everyday lives in ways we don't even think about. Take a look at these common products created using natural gas.

From pottery to plastics, natural gas is incorporated in products and processes every day. Take a look below to see a few examples of what we create with natural gas.

What We Create with Natural Gas

  • Glass

Natural gas is a vital part of the glass-making and glass-blowing processes, giving glass artists the extreme heat that they need, while also being energy efficient. From glass jewelry to stained glass, glass production is one of the many ways that people can be creative with natural gas. And while the methods used today are very different than historical methods, the beautiful glass pieces produced today bring a new layer of beauty.

Organizations like the Pittsburgh Glass Center focus on the art of glass, by educating and providing a community for fellow glass artisans.

Be sure to check out the video above! Artist Julian Maturino of Salvador Alane Studios shows us how he creates his "Low Tide Whiskey Glass" using natural gas...and a whole lot of talent! Thank you to TABLE Magazine for capturing this demonstration at the Pittsburgh Glass Center.

  • Ceramics

Gas kilns allow for a high-quality reduction firing, which can create unique colors compared to electric kilns. Natural gas is also beneficial for larger kilns, because it's often easier and less expensive to install gas service than the electrical lines necessary for large kilns.

Artist Dan Tomcik shows us how to make a ceramic lunch plate in this video. This beautiful plate is just one of thousands of products created by using natural gas. Thank you to TABLE Magazine for giving us this sneak peek into the artistic process!

  • Fertilizers

Petrochemicals (that is, chemicals derived from fuel like natural gas) are used in everything from plastics, to medicines, to cosmetics, and even to fertilizers. Some of these products may suprise you! Take a look at this list of everyday uses of natural gas.
